When Should You Not Wear Contacts?

in Contact Lenses

It’s great wearing contact lenses. They don’t fog up or get full of dust or dirt like glasses and just usually require some rewetting drops part way through the day. There are times when you shouldn’t wear your contacts.

  1. A smoky, hot room like at a party or a bar will be rough on your contacts. You might be best wearing your glasses in this type of situation or else use your rewetting drops a few times. Step outside if you can and get some fresh air to help your contacts and eyes get the oxygen they need.
  2. Drinking alcoholic beverages will dry your eyes.
  3. When you’re sick or are taking certain medications, it would be best to not wear your contacts.
  4. Wearing them during pregnancy may not be good for some women.
  5. Remove your contacts if you’re going to be swimming or else wear swim goggles. The chlorinated water can be very irritating to your eyes.
  6. When showering, keep your eyes closed to avoid getting soap in your eyes or else remove your contacts.
  7. Be careful wearing contact while putting on makeup, which could also irritate your eyes.

It may also not be good to wear your contacts when napping or sleeping. Your lenses could dry out and get sticky. They’ll be hard to remove.

If you do happen to wear your contact lenses during these times, be sure to remove them and clean them before you put them back into your eyes.

You want to take good care of your contacts since they are lenses that sit in your eyes. Your corneas need oxygen from the air and with soft contacts, they allow oxygen to pass through them but if they’re dirty, then your eyes will suffer. Eye surgery and eye problems are not fun, so take really good care of your contacts and you should have no problems. If you’re not sure if your contacts are clean, wash them in solution. Contact lens cleaning solution is very cheap compared to the problems associated with dirty lenses.
