Having clean contact lenses is very important because they are in your eyes for a long time each day. Using contact lens solution that is dirty can really have an impact on the health of your eyes.
First, you should get a brand of contact lens solution and stick with that brand. Your eyes will get used to that brand. A very common type is no-rub contact lens solution.
Every time you take your contacts out of their case and into your eye, you should change the cleaning solution in the case. The solution did its job for that cleaning and now that solution is considered dirty. You do not want to put your lenses into dirty cleaning solution because they will not get a full cleaning before you put your contacts back into yourr eyes again. Some people like to put in new solution as they are taking their contacts out and some like to replace the solution right after removing the dirty lenses so that they don’t have to worry about it at night. I also prefer this way so that I know I remember to have clean solution in the case and it gets the dirty solution out sooner.
You should throw out and get a new contact lens case every time you use a new pair of lenses or else monthly if you change your contacts every 3 months. This will help to ensure that your case stays clean.
Another way to get a good cleaning is to clean out your contact lens case by simply rinsing it out with contact lens solution. Do this at least once a week to make sure no contaminents are getting into the case. Reember to clean the lens case caps, too, since that’s what you are touching the most.
Do not use expired contact lens solution as the cleaning agents in it are no longer going to be as effective as brand new contact lens cleaning solution.
Should You Still Rub Your Lenses with No-Rub Contact Lens Solution?
The answer is yes. These solutions are good at cleaning and although they do say “no rub” on the package, it is still a good suggestion to lightly rub your contact lenses to help clean them further as simply rinsing and soaking them in contact lens cleaning solution may not be enough. The FDA feels that the failure to manually rub contact lenses with solution during the cleaning and disinfection procedure increases the incidence of Acanthamoeba and Fusarium keratitis infections. So rub!
The method to use for rubbing your contacts is the “rub and rinse method.” It’s like washing your hands. Put the solution on the lens in the palm of your hand. With your index finger of your opposite hand, rub the solution over the surface of the contact lens for about 5-10 seconds. Then use a strong stream of contact lens cleaning solution on both sides of the lens. Doing this will remove the most bacteria, protein and other deposits from the surface of the lens. Do this for each contact lens.
Offers for Free Contact Lens Solution
You can look online and find offers for free contact lens solution. Your eye doctor can also often get you a small bottle of free contact lens solution when you visit them for your annual check up. They will have promotional supplies from manufacturers of cleaning solution that want you to try or continue using their product.
Recalls on Lens Solution
And it’s also important to keep an eye on the news and listen for a recall on contact lens solution. It does seem to happen from time to time and your eyes are very important. Do it for them.
Keep Your Contact Lenses Clean!
So keep your contacts clean and they’ll take good care of you. It doesn’t take only but a few extra seconds to make sure you’re using contact lens cleaning solution that’s fresh and not dirty. Your eyes will even notice the difference and you’ll feel better throughout the day.
