One common problem with contact lenses is dryness. Toward the end of the day, your contacts dry out and start to feel sticky and slightly uncomfortable in your eyes. At that point, you can either apply re-wetting drops or simply take them out and put on your glasses.
There are several brands on the market that are moisturizing contact lenses. They use synthetic materials to help moisturize the lenses. For example, Focus Dailies AquaComfort contact lenses by Ciba Vision have 3 such agents to keep them from drying out (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA)). This helps the contacts go in easy and you can wear them longer because they stay moist. To get Focus Dailies, you will need to get a new prescription from your eye doctor.
Another type of moisturizing contact lens is the CooperVision Proclear (also available in toric lenses for astigmatism). It is the only contact lens that the FDA approves this statement for: “may provide improved comfort for contact lens wearers who experience mild discomfort or symptoms relating to dryness during lens wear.” These lenses provide excellent all-day comfort because a substance found naturally in human cells, PC (phosphorylcholine). This substance is essential for biocompatibility. The PC molecules in Proclear lenses create a biocompatible lens material that feels moist and comfortable all day long. It works because these molecules attract and surround themselves with water, keeping Proclear lenses moist and comfortable, even after 12 hours of wear. So if dryness is a problem for you, the ProClear lenses may be great for you to try when you get your next prescription. They’re also available as bi-focal / mutifocal.
And in the meantime, before you see your eye doctor and get a prescription for these types of lenses, you should try the different kinds of rewetting drops which can also help to keep your contacts moisturized. Solutions from companies like Bausch & Lomb or Opti-Free can help keep them from getting dry during times when you’re out later and night and want to keep your contacts in instead of switching to wearing glasses. These drops can sooth your eyes and also help prevent wetness and irritation.
Speaking of staying out later at night, there is said to be a connection between drinking alcohol and getting dry eyes. So if you do go out to drink and are wearing your contacts, be sure to bring along that small bottle of rewetting drops so that you keep your eyes healthy.
Remember to listen to your body – when your eyes get itchy and dry, they’re telling you that they need relief, so don’t ignore the signs and take good care of your eyes.
