Lady Gaga Round Contact Lenses

Lady Gaga Contact Lens Trend

Young women and teens are going ‘GaGa’ for circle contact lenses. The lenses first became popular in Japan, Singapore, and South Korea with those who wanted to emulate the childlike eyes of anime characters. They are used in Singapore to create the Ulljjang look, which is a South Korean term which means ‘best face’ or ‘good looking.’ The main idea of that look is big eyes, a high nose bridge, and fair skin.

Circle Contacts – Contact Lenses That Change Pupil Size

Many women equate circle lenses to wearing eye liner, which also makes eyes look larger. More recently, Lady Gaga appeared in her ‘Bad Romance’ video wearing a pair, and American girls went crazy for them. Most people in the United States have to find them through online retailers or get leads on where to find them on online message boards.

But the trend can be dangerous. There have been cosmetic contact trends in the past, like colored contacts. However, colored contact lenses were primarily used to correct vision problems, with an added cosmetic bonus, and were only issued with a prescription. In the United States, it is illegal to sell contacts without a prescription. Because circle lenses are purely cosmetic and aren’t issued with a prescription, they are never sized or fitted properly.

Contact Lens Warning

The American Academy of Ophthalmologists recently issued a warning about the lenses, and how they can be damaging to eyes. Each eye is unique with different curvatures, so contacts are not one sized fits all. Because circle lenses do not come with a prescription and therefore aren’t sized or fitted properly, there is a risk of them being too tight or too loose. When lenses are too tight, they can cause inflammation of the eye, swelling or the cornea, redness, and corneal abrasions. When they are too loose, they can move around causing redness and irritation of the eye. But the main risk is infection.

Many young people believe that because they are purely cosmetic, they are okay to sleep in. But the eye gets less oxygen at night, which makes bacteria and infection easier to breed on a lens. The safest thing to do is to wear them for brief periods of time, never sleep in them, and soak them in a sterilizing solution when they aren’t being worn. The best way to make these lenses safe is for manufacturers to make them in different sizes to fit customers, and also meet the requirements to be offered with a prescription.
