Taking Care of Contact Lenses is Important

Eye contacts were a wonderful invention for anyone with near sightedness by letting them see without having to be burdened by wearing glasses on their face. Millions of people wear contacts everyday. Every person who wears contacts or plans on wearing contacts should know exactly how important it is to take good care of contact lenses.

Not taking good care of contacts can lead to eye infections. Eye infections can cause discomfort in the eyes and in some cases cause blindness. Eye sight is nothing to play around with or take chances on. Nobody wants to lose their eyesight. Eyesight is probably the most important sense there is, so taking care of contacts is very important to prevent any damage to the eyes.

It’s really not hard at all to take proper care of contact lenses. Only minimal time is actually required for someone to take care of contacts.

First, make sure to always wash your hands well before putting in or taking out contacts. This is common sense, but it’s important to never get lazy or careless enough to put in or remove contacts without washing your hands first. An eye infection is not worth it and it doesn’t take long to wash your hands.

Next, all contacts need to be cleaned and removed of protein every day. It’s dangerous to wear dirty contacts, because this can damage your eyes. Always put in clean contacts. There are no-rub contact solutions where you don’t need to rub your contacts. Contacts need to sit in contact solution for at least 4 hours a day to get cleaned. The contact lens solution cleans, removes protein, disinfects, rinses, and stores the lens so they are safe and clean to wear the next day.

Depending on what type of contacts you have, you need to dispose of them and wear new ones according to the directions. There are daily contact lenses which need to be disposed of everyday, 2 week contact lenses, and even lenses that last up to a year. Most optometrists don’t prescribe contacts that last a year anymore, because short term contact lenses are generally better and there’s less chance of any eye problems since they are frequently changed. Different contact lenses are designed to last for different amounts of time, so don’t over wear your contact lenses. This can lead to eye discomfort, bad vision, and infections. Your eyesight is never worth saving a few dollars. If something happens to your eyesight, a few dollars won’t get it back.

So if you always wash your hands before putting in and removing contact lenses, put the contacts in solution everyday, and don’t over-wear the contact lenses, then there should be no problem with your contact lenses. Follow the directions that come with your contact lenses and contact solution. Any special instructions would be recommended by your optometrist. These simple instructions to take care of your contact lenses are very important.
