Contact Lens Care Instructions

in Contact Lenses

Proper contact lens care is important both for the health of your eyes and for the health of your contacts themselves.

The first step to ensuring proper contact lens care is to have the necessary tools available to properly maintain your contacts. You must have a contact case, contact solution (your eye care provider may have suggestions as to particular brands), and depending on the moisture of your eyes, rewetting drops. After assembling all the needed items it is important before beginning any care of your contacts, to wash and dry your hands well. This will ensure your contacts and eyes are kept as clean as possible. Next you may remove your contacts from your eyes, placing a finger on your bottom lashes and sliding the contact off the center of your eye and onto your finger.

From there, you gently place the contact in the contact case and fill approximately three quarters of the way with solution. Make sure the solution is new solution each time you place a contact in the storage case as this ensures proper disinfection each time. Place cap correlating with that contact on case and repeat procedure on the opposite side.

For care of contacts during wear, your eye care provider may recommend rewetting drops. These help with maintaining moisture between the eye and contact, especially during extensive wear and dry situations, such as planes. Rewetting drops are to be administered while the contacts are in your eyes. First, as in the case of cleaning, wash and dry your hands thoroughly. Next uncap the drops and place a finger on your bottom lashes and pull them down slightly. Looking upward drop one to two drops into the inner corner of your eye (without touching your eye) and blink. This will ensure as much of the rewetting drops as possible will get into your eyes. Recap the solution.

Proper care and maintenance of your contacts is essential to the longevity of your contacts and to the health of your eyes. In caring properly for your contacts you ensure that they maintain the quality necessary to provide you with the best sight possible. In addition, you ensure the health of your eyes, minimizing the chance of infection or contamination to your eyes and helping them to see as clearly as possible. Your eyes are one of your greatest treasures and taking care of your contacts properly contributes to taking care of your eyes.
