Choosing Colored Contacts

When choosing a colored contact lens, there are a number of options available. Colored lenses are available as tints, blends, and theatrics. Determining which variety to acquire depends upon the look the consumer desires to achieve.

Tinted Lenses

Tinted lenses come in two selections: enhancement and pure color tint. As the name suggests, enhancement lenses are meant to enhance the natural color of the iris, not to completely mask it. If a person has pale blue eyes but would like a rich shade of sapphire, enhancement lenses would be an ideal choice. Enhancement lenses will not swap a set of green eyes for brown; for this, the consumer needs pure color tinted lenses. Color tints permit dramatic eye color changes for even the darkest eyes. The darkest of color tints are also known as opaques, and work well when swapping one deep color for another.

Color Blend Lenses

Color blend contact lenses are a variety of color tint lenses. The difference between blends and pure color tints is that blends work to mimic a natural iris appearance. If one were to examine the iris closely, he or she would see that it is not made up of only one color, but usually a blend of two or more colors and shades. Color blend lenses use this physical characteristic for a very natural color facade.

Theatrical Lenses

Sometimes, a simple color change is not enough. If the consumer wishes to have an “unnatural” appearance, theatrical lenses are the best choice. Theatrical lenses, so named due to their use in the movie and costuming industry, permit the wearer to not only dramatically alter his or her eye color, but to transform into something else entirely. Theatrical lenses can give the wearer “picture” eyes, the look of an animal, or even a movie monster. Theatrical lens choices range from bright red to white with tiny spiders around the pupils. Though all colored lenses have to ability to interfere with vision due to lens shifts or pupil dilation, theatrical lenses will likely interfere the most.

Finding the Best Look

If a natural look is desired, choosing the best colored contact lens color is a lot like choosing cosmetics. The consumer will want to choose a color that is only slightly different from his or her natural hue. For example, if the consumer has warm tones present in his or her hair and eyes, he or she will want to stick with shades of hazel or brown. Likewise, if the consumer’s eyes are blue, enhancing the blue with a “new” blue or hints of gray will be optimal. If the consumer is looking to have his or her eyes stand out, he or she may want to go in the opposite color direction from where he or she is currently. Wearers with brown eyes may opt for violet or emerald. Wearers with warm skin and hair colors may want to go with blue eyes.

Many contact lens websites allow consumers the option of “trying on” a new eye color. Customers may upload a photo of themselves and test different colors until they find a look with which they are comfortable.
