The type may look familiar, but what is it for exactly? The word torus, the origin of toric, means doughnut-shaped object. A toric lens, thus is a lens that is a combination of a sphere and a cylinder. Why would someone want to use a toric lens for a contact lens? Is it not better to have a spherical lens for optimal light refraction, according to Physics 101? Normally, yes, but for people with astigmatism, a spherical lens only makes the light refraction error worse. A toric lens is needed to correct astigmatism.

Astigmatism is the corneal condition in which the cornea has an irregular curvature, causing two or more focal points in the eye. This causes blurry vision. With a toric contact lens, this defect can be remedied with the contact lens creating a spherical surface for light to enter. The toric lens is shaped and arranged in a way that the irregular surface becomes spherical. Because of the specific way the lens shapes the cornea, toric contact lenses cannot be rotated on the eye.

Toric lens are similar to other contact lenses in terms of material and availability. Like regular contact lenses, toric contact lenses come in both soft and rigid gas permeable. The rigid gas permeable contact lenses give sharper focus and more resistance to rotation and deformation compared to soft contact lenses due to its hare rigidity, but many still prefer soft contact lenses due to the immediate comfort it provides.

Just as with glasses and contact lenses, an eye professional is required to fit toric contact lenses. Toric lens examinations take more time and effort because each patient’s astigmatism may be unique and a somewhat custom fit is required by the eye professional. Thus, examinations may be more costly. Likewise, the cost of toric lenses are more expensive due to the additional effort required to make them.
